For those of you that have been reading for awhile, you know that we have been remodeling our house for the last....oh, let's see....going on couple years now (yes...it is a money pit). The interiors are close to being done, save for some issues with a bouncy floor in the kitchen which we are trying to deal with....that is whole story in itself.....and I really don't want to go there.
I would rather go here! My husband has taken over building our deck on the back of the house. I am sooooo lucky to have a very handy husband. He has been doing such a beautiful job it makes me want to cry for joy.
He is modeling the pickets after the front porch railings and has copied our 1911 detailing to a tee. It's a long story, but the posts are higher right now than they will be after inspection, so we can match the height to the front of the house (no longer "to code"....shhh!) The wood on the deck is Ipe, AKA Ironwood....which is a rain forest wood like teak, but much harder and is actually fire-rated. It is so dense it will not burn like other woods. You have to be careful to buy it from a source that is certified farmed wood so as not to harm any rain forests. The good thing is, it lasts so much longer than other woods, it is not necessary to replace it for the life of the home.
Here...close-up of the detailing...primer coat on. Each picket has a piece of molding on each corner....Every time I look at this my husband gets to deposit more coin in the relationship bank.
Our next challenge: the backyard. I am going to sketch it out for you and post our "vision", perhaps tonight! We are going to stucco the existing concrete block wall on the left and make a water wall there. The back fence may eventually also become a wall with a fireplace. We will hard scape most of this area and have planting beds around the perimeter...a tree in the back next to the fireplace. These "city" homes do not have gigantic yards, but it is plenty for us. We also have a side yard that will get lawn and raised vegetable beds (someday!)
Our detached garage is on the left here, porch on the right. This will have a path over to the side yard. There will be a gate from the garage to the end of the porch so we can keep the dog in the side yard if necessary. I want to put an arbor with roses over the gate.
This is looking down the other side of the house where we will have a stepping stone path and alot of shade plantings.
So if any of you out there are garden aficionados, please chime in! We are always looking for suggestions!

Oh Katie, How lucky you are to have this wonderful house and a wonderful man to help you make it so beautiful. I love that you are taking the time and effort to do historically sensitive detailing.
Why don't you create a central path flanked by square beds edged with box or something that can be tidily clipped ... and then go nuts within the beds. I'm all for symmetry tempered with madness. See what I mean on tomorrow's post. Oh and the central path should lead to something, a statue or a seat within an arbor, et cetera. What would Nancy Lancaster do?
By the way, I am exceedingly enamoured by the solid good looks of your porch, railings, everything. It gives one confidence.
I am jealous. Handy husbands are the best!
Hello BC,
Thanks so much. We are trying to maintain the character. It does take time, but it's so great when you see the results of the effort. I think my husband would rather be golfing, hiking anything... but he is a trooper.
Hi AL!
I love boxwood! We have used it in the front yard at the back of our beds, so it would make sense to use it in the back as well! I will take that under advisment! Thankyou.
And I think you too for your confidence! Coming from you, it means alot. :)
Hi gilt!
He is very handy to have around. I am very lucky!
I love the style of your house! I wish my husband could do detail work like yours. How exciting to be renovating and earning "sweat equity". I don't know what plants grow in N. California, since I live in San Diego, but I think used brick patios would look great.
awesome katie and katie-hubby! i love that you are trying to keep the architectural character of your house. i live in a neighborhood where the homes were built in the 1920's and so many people are putting in modern additions/renovations and it almost always looks plain wrong. i'm all for decorating an older home in a modern way, but architecturally, i think if you want modern architecture, you should just buy modern architecture.
can't wait to see what the future holds in store for your backyard.
Lucky You to have such a handy Man! Such a superb job! Can't wait for you to share the finished product!
It's looking amazing!
Someday you will look back at all the wonderful things you did... money pit and all... and say I'm so glad we did this... I love it! I say this with experience... I lived through all the nightmares of remodel... I can NOW laugh at things that at the time were NOT funny. And just think you will have GREAT stories to tell FOREVER! Hang in there... the silver lining does arrive!
Your house is GORGEOUS!!! And way to have a handy husband!
adding to what AL said - the center path would lead to the center where it gets bigger or round - the bed's edges matching the roundness on the corner - and in the middle is an urn or some focal point. so - center aisle, four beds - two on each side - and at the middle - a focal point. very Charlestonian.
Just beautiful = you are lucky to have a willing husband!!!
Peonies ... kalmia (my favorite) ... bleeding hearts everywhere ... thinking, thinking ... what fun to be doing all this ... oh, and masses of irises ...
Hi- Greetings from Utah!
I found your blog through another designers and love it! I hope you don't mind that I check it out!
My house is older, and a money pit as well. It's been a struggle for me to do one thing at a time and see other things sit and wait for our attention. I LOVE, LOVE that you are doing your house to the historic detail. I adore all of the white, and the Love and beauty you putting into every detail.
Katie - it's perfect! I cannot chime in on gardening advice as I am a disaster, but am sure you will do a beautiful job.
WOW! Thank you all so much for coming to visit! You all made my morning!
Hello Cucina- We have been considering brick, and may redo our front walk in brick....we are thinking about rectangular random patern bluestone for the back in the greeenish tones.
Maison 21-I totally agree! I have seen the occassional melding of two styles, but very infregquently is it successful. I LOVE older architecture and have never lived in a house that is newer than the 30's. I just love the craftsmanship and detail. I love contemporary things too and try my best to mix them together on the inside, but only with decor, not the permanent things. I think you are wonderful at mixing up things I love. I read your blog regularly for inspiration!
Thank you ND and Suzy! I will show you progress along the way. :)
Fifi! Thanks for the visit! Ithink you are right. When you put so much effort into something, I think you really have much more appreciation for it. This is going to be our "forever" house, (unless we move to the beach after retirement!) But I do love the idea of grandkids runnig around here someday....in the very distant future!
Thank SG! I do feel quite lucky.;)
Hi JoniI think you are right! If I am interpreting right.....the patht to the side yard would be wonderful to have a focal point fountain to lead you forward into that space. I had not thought of that and LOVE that idea!
Hi Anne Marie!
Thanks for stopping in. I love older houses and neighborhoods too. They have a romantic mystery to them....stories to tell. Ours is a very special neighborhood where neighbors all know each other and people walk and talk alot. There are huge shade trees and frogs chirping in the evening in the warm breeze.....I could go on and on.
Mrs. Blandings...after seeing your GORGEOUS peonies, I'm just not so sure I beleive you! you have a beautiful garden! :)
Wonderful job! And wonderful husband!
Lucky and talented is a great combination.

I am so happy to have popped into see this wonderful example of carpentry , I just score some disgarded railings from a neighbour to which I will make into my new railing for my back deck , you have given me such wonderful inspiration, thank you so much.

Katie -- kudos to your husband! It's beautiful. And I totally agree with Maison21's points. Can't wait to see more results.
I am floored by the beauty of this renovation! Congrats! I know how much it can take out of you, but the reward is so great!!!!
your house looks beautiful - it's well worth the wait!
good luck with the deck.

Hello Topsy! Thanks so much I do feel lucky....at least most days.
Hi chriskauf...and thanks for the visit!I hope your deck turns out to be beautiful! What a score!
Thanks Robyn and Anne! You are very kind.:)
And Thanks Courtney and EOS! I love and old house, and am trying to stay true!
Hello Mademoiselle! Thanks you for the visit and your very kind words.:)
Oh, this is making me cry too! How beautiful! I am crying because we had a railing disaster in our house backyard. I hired a carpenter to duplicate a railing and he botched it twice. It was a disaster. I learned a big lesson, don't trust someone to interpret a photo. Watch their every move. If my husband was a carpenter or skilled with that sort of thing, we'd have had a lovely railing too! Lucky girl you are!
Love it!
Melissa
I love your porch, especially the trims on the pickets! I will have to show this to my handy husband. We're starting to plan our porch makeover and this is great inspiration.
