Design Icon: Frank Gehry and the Princeton Lewis Library

Model of the Lewis Library found here

The Lewis Library designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry is slated to open this September 11th with the dedication planned for Thursday November 2oth. The edgy and eye catching design, which certainly lives up to the Gehry reputation, is named for Peter B. Lewis, Princeton class of 1955. Mr. Lewis, a Princeton trustee and Chairman of the Board for the Progressive Corp., one of the nation's leading auto insurer's, has gifted $60 million for the construction of the library and it's programs.

According to the Daily Princetonian, the construction process, which started in 2004, has not been without it's share of controversy. Two years behind schedule, with a new contractor finishing the process, it is quite an interesting story. To read just what was happening behind the scenes, click here and here.

But, regardless of the obstacles, it looks like it is going to be a huge win for Princeton this Fall. GO TEAM!

Spotted an interview with him and found it amazing how he cleaned planes when he was young to make money. I can see how he was inspired as his designs seem to take flight.

Hop on over - I did a little "diddy" for your today!

Interesting that the grand opening is on September 11. It certainly is an unforgetable date.
I will look forward to making a little side trip to Princeton the next time I am in New York.
This is something not to be missed!

Hi Pamela! You are right! it does.

Patricia, that is something I did not know. It makes it all so much clearer!

Hi Jae! I know he has had controversy surrounding his designs in the past, but in this case, the controversy was about the bribes that the contractor's employee was taking. Very interesting read.

Hi Linda...I think so too.

Hi VV! I thought the date was interesting as well. You lucky thing to get to see it in person.

Hello Paul and thanks for the visit! That must have been an amazing experience! I have been a fan since I visited Mr. Gehry's home back in the 80's in LA on a architecture tour. Normally, the tour just visited the exterior of his home, but he happened to be there that day and invited us all in. Such a fun experience.
