Magazine Mainstays, and the Loss of a Favorite

As many of you have read by now through Cote de Texas, Pigtown Design, and other blogs, we have lost yet another excellent publication: Southern Accents. This news was a bit of a shock and I was so sad to hear it. It has made me appreciate and look forward to getting the new issues of Elle Decor and Metropolitan Home all the more!

And it seems we have very good issues to look forward too! Elle Decor, always one of my faves, is showing of John Mayer's Giorgio Armani designed SoHo pad....I must admit, I have been very curious about how John lives behind the scenes! We will also get to see the Kentucky Farm of Mark Badgley and James Mischka, and Theory's Istvan Francer's Connecticut Farmhouse among other notable digs.

And for those searching for that perfect writing desk (I am always on the hunt!)? There is a roundup of the ten best. Travel destination? Elle Decor has it covered with a story about enchanting Istanbul.

So much to be thankful for in one publication! My foot is tapping out the seconds until it arrives.

Metropolitan Home treats us to an issue all about Renovation. Don't let the cover fool you! The Met Home of the month is a century-old home in Washington, D.C. that has been "given new life". And in Savannah, an historic Townhouse is transformed. There are also modern twists given to a 1952 LA house, and an artist's Manhattan Loft. Lot's to look forward to!

As I mentioned, one of my very favorite publications will be seeing it's last issue this Fall, Southern Accents. I am sure the complete story as to the why's and how's will be forthcoming, but until then, we will all be scratching our heads and wondering why a beautiful magazine like this gets the boot while others that seem so obscure are still in circulation.

I am mourning the loss whatever the reason and am posting some of my most favorite covers as a sort of "ode":

Southern Accents, you were full of charm and grace, just like the South. It will be a long while before I forget to listen for that undeniable magazine thunk through my front door mail slot. You will be missed.

I"m so glad I've saved so many of my Southern Accents. I'm really going to miss this one dreadfully. Their Christmas issue was always such a treat.

So sad to see this lovely mag go. But, true there are still several great mags out there. John Mayer's pad? Can't wait to see it.

So sad for all of us! Seeing all of those past covers really hammers in how much this great magazine will be missed.

It's so sad... not only for us but all the folks losing their jobs too!

Loved Elle Decor and was also interested in seeing John Mayer's place by Armani.... it's very sleek and not at all like the rock star pad I'd imagined!

Thanks.

Valerie

I was not following Southern Accents much but I can understand the disappointment and sadness of regular readers, it is like losing a long time "virtual" friend.
Fortunately we now have more blogs like yours that give us pleasure.

Dangit....okay, that is the next to the last decor magazine that I have a subscription to (had) :-(. At one point I was getting 15 magazines a month, now I'm down to 2. This sucks.

Great cover choices! It is sad to lose a magazine with a southern slant. But perhaps some of our favorites will be revived once the economy is in better shape. Or maybe an editor will come up with an exciting new concept.

I never thought I'd cherish my old magazines as much as I do. I hold them dear now D:

Great post!

This is a travesty! I have saved and cherished every issue for the last 14 years and have referred to them almost on a daily basis. I was discouraged at the passing of "Victoria" (then it came back after many years), then the passing of the classic "House and Garden" (still can not believe that at a subscription rate of $1 a month and the warehouse of informative grace, it had to exit the printed world) and most recently "Domino" which held its own in the 21st century but did not have the pedigree of House and Garden or Southern Accents. As an interior designer since the 1980's the reference and expertise of the editorial and visual pieces of this magazine were oustanding and at the top of the "design field". Nothing compares to the print value, versus the images you see on the "screen". Yes, the blogs and sites are wonderful, however, call me an old fashioned girl, I prefer a "hands on approach". The design publications that are still out there, possibly only 3 that I can merit, may also become extinct in this economic turmoil our country is in. Thanks for all of your incredible hard work Southern Accents, it did not go unnoticed. Beryl

Oh know! I had not heard. I just the invite for the Interior Design Contest ~ UGH! I love Elle Decor and Met Home too. I love the day they arrive. I looked at John's place ~ very nice. Dam about Southern Accents though. When will be their last issue?

Another one bites the dust! As much as I love reading everyone's blogs I am still old fashioned, there is nothing like flipping through a magazine. :(

I too am missing some of our great magazines. Thankfully, House Beautiful is stepping it up too and for great photos...we still have Veranda. There is nothing like a real magazine for inspiration.

I heard about it from Joni. I guess it just shows how times are tough for everyone.

I am still mourning the loss of DOMINO and absolutely furious that I only came across it in time for the last two issues! *sigh*
